Indonesia-Brunei Education Cooperation, Study Opportunities and Scholarships Expand

Daftarsbmptn.comIn an effort to strengthen bilateral relations in the field of education, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam continue to expand strategic cooperation that provides learning opportunities, scholarships, and study programs for students from both countries. This collaboration not only strengthens diplomatic relations but also serves as an important bridge in human resource development in the ASEAN region.

This cooperation includes various scholarship programs, academic exchanges, and inter-university collaborations designed to open access to high-quality education for Indonesian and Bruneian students. One of the most prominent initiatives is the establishment of Brunei government scholarships for international students, including Indonesian citizens. The Brunei Darussalam Government Scholarship (BDGS) offers study opportunities from diploma to bachelor’s and master’s levels at several leading Brunei higher education institutions such as Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), and Politeknik Brunei. The program includes tuition waivers, living allowances, round-trip airfare, book allowances, and campus dormitory facilities, providing comprehensive support to scholarship recipients.

In addition to scholarship programs organized by the Brunei government, universities in both countries have also established academic cooperation agreements that encourage student and faculty mobility. Student and faculty exchange programs are one concrete example of this collaboration. For example, several Indonesian students have participated in student exchange programs at UBD, which provide hands-on learning experiences in an international environment and broaden cross-cultural horizons.

This educational cooperation also aligns with the Indonesian government’s efforts to expand opportunities for international students to study in Indonesia through scholarship schemes such as the Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (KNB). The KNB program is a full scholarship offered by the Indonesian government to students from developing countries, providing opportunities to study at various Indonesian universities while building international networks. While the KNB program is multilateral and covers many countries, it also opens doors for Bruneian students interested in studying in Indonesia.

The role of this educational diplomacy is inseparable from the intensive support of both governments. Indonesia has consistently strengthened bilateral educational collaboration, including support from the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Bandar Seri Begawan, which actively facilitates collaboration between educational institutions, teacher exchange programs, and study visits to strengthen relations between schools and universities in both countries.

According to ASEAN education observers, the focus of Indonesia–Brunei education cooperation is on building the capacity of the younger generation through global competition and strengthening academic quality. This includes enhancing joint research programs, ASEAN university consortia, and a series of educational conferences connecting academic institutions from both countries. Such programs are expected to encourage Indonesian and Bruneian students to collaborate on future scientific projects and technological innovations.

Students interested in taking advantage of this opportunity are encouraged to monitor the BDGS scholarship application regularly, as the application schedule and requirements change each academic year. Some program sources offer early-year application opportunities, with a selection process that includes academic assessment and English language competency evaluation.

This cooperation is also important in the broader ASEAN context, where education is a pillar of regional integration. Student exchanges, academic mobility, and research collaboration are crucial instruments in preparing a competent young generation ready to compete on the global stage. Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, through this bilateral education initiative, not only provide access to quality education but also strengthen friendly relations between students, academics, and citizens of both countries.
