Social Issues, Class IX Informatics Practical Exam Very Innovative

No longer simply testing basic computer skills, this practical exam challenged students to design a digital flyer while also addressing social issues relevant to everyday life.

The practical exam was designed to measure students’ digital literacy, creativity, and critical thinking skills, in line with the implementation of the Independent Curriculum, which emphasizes contextual and project-based learning. Students were asked to create digital works using simple graphic design applications, then convey social messages through communicative and responsible visuals. According to an Informatics teacher, this approach aims to ensure students are not only technically proficient but also able to use technology wisely and positively.

“We want students to understand that technology is not just for entertainment, but also a means of conveying messages and solutions to social issues around them,” she said.

Flyer Design as a Medium of Expression

In this practical exam, students were asked to create a digital flyer with a free theme but with educational content. The chosen themes varied, ranging from environmental cleanliness campaigns, bullying prevention, digital literacy, the dangers of drugs, to healthy living. Each work was judged based on design elements, clarity of message, creativity, and theme relevance. One ninth-grade student expressed enthusiasm for the exam because it provided a space for expression.

“We could express our own ideas, choose colors, images, and messages. It felt like creating a real work, not just an exam,” she said.

Sharpening Social Awareness

Interestingly, this practical exam not only focused on design skills but also fostered students’ social awareness. By addressing issues close to the lives of teenagers, students were encouraged to think critically about their surroundings and their role as the digital generation. The principal of a public junior high school explained that this approach aligns with the goals of character education.

“We want students to be sensitive to social issues and able to express their ideas creatively and responsibly through digital media,” she said.

Positive Use of Technology

The Informatics practical exam utilizes both school computers and students’ personal laptops. The applications used are tailored to students’ abilities, such as basic graphic design software or user-friendly online platforms. This ensures that the exam can be taken equally without burdening students with excessive technical demands.

Teachers also emphasize the importance of digital ethics, including the use of copyright-free images and the formulation of messages that do not contain discriminatory or provocative elements. This way, students learn that digital work must be created responsibly.

Positive Response from Parents and Students

The implementation of this innovative practical exam received a positive response from parents. Many parents considered this method more relevant to current needs and able to hone 21st-century skills. They hope a similar approach can be applied to other subjects.

Meanwhile, students found this practical exam more enjoyable and challenging than conventional exams. In addition to testing abilities, this exam also provided real-life experience in creating meaningful digital content.

Evaluation and Future Expectations

The results of this practical exam will serve as evaluation material for teachers to determine the extent to which students understand the Informatics material and are able to apply it creatively. Going forward, the school plans to develop a more collaborative project-based exam format, including group work and presentations.
